5:07 pm - Twas the Evening of Samhain (Yoinked from naedyschannirra)

ericsilverbear
’Twas the evening of Samhain, and all through the place
Were Pagans preparing the ritual space.
The candles were set in the corners with care,
In hopes that the Watchtowers soon would be there.
We all had our robes on, as is habitual
And had just settled down and were starting our ritual
When out on the porch there arose such a chorus
That we went to the door, and waiting there for us
Were children in costumes of various kinds
With visions of chocolate bright in their minds.

In all of our workings, we’d almost forgot,
But we had purchased candy, we’d purchased a LOT
And so, as they flocked from all over the street,
They all got some chocolate or something else sweet.
We didn’t think twice of delaying our rite,
Kids just don’t have this much fun every night.
For hours they came, with the time-honored schtick,
Of giving a choice: a treat or a trick.
As is proper, the parents were there for the games,
Watching the children and calling their names.
“On Vader, On Leia,
On Dexter and DeeDee,
On Xena, on Buffy,
On Casper and Tweety!
To the block of apartments on the neighboring road
You’ll get so much candy, you’ll have to be towed!”

The volume of children eventually dropped,
And as it grew darker, it finally stopped.
But as we prepared to return to our rite,
One child more stepped out of the night.
She couldn’t have been more than twelve or thirteen.
Her hair was deep red, and her robe, forest green
With a simple gold cord tying off at the waist.
She’d a staff in her hand and a smile on her face.
No make-up, nor mask, or accompanying kitsch,
So we asked who she was; she replied, “A Witch!
And no, I don’t fly through the sky on my broom,
I only use that thing for cleaning my room.
My magical powers aren’t really that neat,
And I won’t threaten tricks; I’ll just ask for a treat.”
We found it refreshing, so we gave incense cones,
A candle, a crystal, a few other stones,
And the rest of the candy which might fill a van
She turned to her father, a man dressed as Pan
And laughed, “Yes, I know, Dad, it’s past time for bed,”
And started to leave, but she first turned and said,
“I’m sorry for further delaying your rite.
Blessed Samhain to all, and a magical night.”

9:18 pm - OZ colon cancer surgery scheduled

ericsilverbear
From Oberon Zell-Ravenheart
8/27/08 report

To all my dear Friends,

After a bit of concern regarding my surgeon's vacation plans, and the possibility that he wouldn't be able to do this surgery until Sept. 15 when he returns, we got it all worked out today. I've been on a liquid diet all day, and tonight I'll be drinking Citrate of Magnesium. Tomorrow morning (Thurs., 8/28), at 10:00 am, I'll be checking into the Petaluma Valley Hospital in Petaluma, CA, where they'll hook me up to an IV and begin the prep work.

2:28 pm - COMMUNITY APPEAL: Cat Needs Help...

catdeville
I have been delaying and delaying posting this, even though I’ve had several people tell me I should. I’m like that. I like to help, and I hate to ask for help. It’s just the way I was raised. And I’ve delayed long enough that it may be a moot point, but, again… it has been impressed upon me that I wouldn’t think it was wrong for anyone else to ask, and that it’s wrong for me to not turn to my community in time of need, so I’m doing so.

I need help folks. I’ve been struggling along financially for several years now, and things have gotten progressively more dire over the last few months. My family has been helping out as much as they are able (most of them are in pretty dim positions as well), and my Mom has done her best to keep me afloat. The unemployment ran out the end of last month, and I’ve been avidly job hunting and interviewing, but haven’t been getting 2nd interviews or job offers. For the first time this month I have been unable to pay the rent and have no income with which to commit to when I can pay this months or next months rent. I have a couple of hundred dollars put away from a freelance job I lucked into and I have food in the pantry & fridge, and the utilities are being put on Mom’s credit cards (which are almost maxed out – but for now that’s covered), but if I don’t find a) some emergency funds quickly and b) find some steady employment which will pay my bills, *ASAP*, then I’m being threatened with a 3 day notice to “quit or pay rent” by my landlord – and of course I don’t’ have the funds to move out or store my stuff, nor anywhere to move to (or the funds to secure someplace to move to.) I’m supposed to give my manager an update tomorrow, and am still hoping to hear back from one of the jobs I interviewed for last week… but at this point I have nothing more to tell him than I did at the beginning of the month. So I have a looming deadline, and no where to go.

So, what I need is this:
a) Emergency funds to allow me to either pay the rent, or get my stuff moved into storage and to get into a residential hotel. If you are in the position to help, I do have a PayPal account, and I’ve included a PayPal button below (assuming it comes through. If not, it’s up at the bottom of my LiveJournal page here: http://catdeville.livejournal.com/profile
b) Along those lines, if I’ve ever “loaned” you money and forgotten about it, or if I’ve helped you in the past and you’re in the position to chip in, now would be the time. I *know* lots of us are in similar positions, so don’t worry if you can’t, but I’d be grateful if you can.
c) Any referrals for freelance DTP, writing, administrative, customer service type work you can send my way. I can’t relocate, but anything you can recommend that I can do remotely will help. If you would like a copy of a resume and skills list, just e-mail me.
d) Energy… If you know me well enough to send me energy toward obtaining stable, *permanent* employment, preferably in line with our common values, that would be gratefully received. If it was also logistically easy (close to home, easy commute or able to telecommute, good hours, etc.), fun, casual dress and something I can actually contribute to, those would be bonuses ;-) But I’ll take whatever I can do competently.

I really appreciate any and all community support, in whatever form it takes. Right now I’m having a real conflict in divvying up my time between trying to finish up as much CAW stuff as possible in case I do end up having to move out (and loose my high speed internet connection in the process), getting packed up (as my physical limitations will permit) and trying to continue my job search (as well as trying to spend a little time on the commission only freelance “scheduler” type job I have so that I have the potential to make a commission), so any and all support, financial, moral and energetic are *all* deeply appreciated.

Never Thirst,
Cat

7:17 pm - CAW Announcement: CAW.org website and mailing list updates

catdeville
First, apologies for cross posting but I wanted to get this information out to as many members of the grok flock as possible.

Things are moving apace behind the scenes, administratively, in getting CAW back up and running as smoothly as possible. As part of that I’m working on getting the caw.org domain updated as quickly as I can. This is a pretty time consuming project as it entails everything from confirming links and verifying contact information to reestablishing the majordomo lists which were lost when the old caw.org server went down ages ago. Combine that with the fact that this work is being performed *without* any of our old records (which were destroyed and never made it to the new BoD) and it’s a pretty daunting task. But never fear! We will prevail in that task!

To update the interested parties, I’m posting this information to my journal as well as to any communities that I’m a member of which are still connected to CAW. Permission, from the author, to forward this information to other CAW communities and interested parties, as long as such forwarding does not violate the rules of the list, forum, board or group that you’re posting to, is granted.

Here’s where we are & where we’re going:
o The PayPal account is up and functioning. PayPal buttons for donations, tithing and membership should (hopefully!) be up on the site by Jan 1st, along with the new membership form. Membership forms will also be uploaded to the files areas of those yahoogroups still connected to CAW by the 1st as well.
o I hope to verify contacts this week or next on all nests that are still listed and remove those which are no longer active. If you have a nest, proto-nest or proto-nest forming that you wish to have listed, please drop an email to webspinners@caw.org with your info so that I can get it updated. Sending a request for web listing will also generate an entry in the Nest Database and a request for a nesting reactivation packet to be sent to you. (I don’t have that completed yet, but since I’m working on both, I’ll get one out to you as soon as I can. If you include a nest coordinator’s email address I’ll be able to send that to you as an attachment via email.) For now I’m keeping folks listed who desire association as nesting requirements haven’t been finalized and if/how we’re going to ‘grandfather in’ prior nests hasn’t been resolved. Once those issues have been resolved, I’ll update nest coordinators on what’s required. Having your contact information will help with that.
o ** MOST OLD caw.org MAILING LISTS HAVE BEEN RECREATED ** That means that you can now subscribe to them. This includes feedback and internest! The long term goal is to eventually replace these with forums, but, in the meantime, having access to the majordomo lists is better than lack of communication. Here is a list of the general lists. Some specialized lists (such as for the BoD and clergy) have also been created:
o caw-101 Church of All Worlds Seekers Class List
o feedback CAW business list - Members Only
o internest Internest
o caw_events CAW Events
o caw_spirit CAW Spirit
o nestconnect Nesting List - Nest Coordinators Only

To subscribe to a CAW list, send email to majordomo@caw.org with a message “subscribe listname”.

If you have a CAW list or a CAW associated list that you want listed on the web site, please drop me a note at the webspinners@caw.org address.

Finally, just as an FYI (a full report will follow by the next BoD meeting), know that we’re working on reconstructing the RINGs, reevaluating and rewriting the ByLaws, reorganizing Nesting, designing interactive databases for membership, volunteer/project coordination, nesting and the bibliography and much, much more. If you have ideas, concerns, brainstorms or questions, drop me an email. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll try and find it for you and if I’m not the right person to ask, I’ll try and find out who is.

Never Thirst,
Cat Deville

4:33 pm - Pagan Arts Marketplace - still time to qualify for free auctions!

bruhinb
Don't forget that Pagan artists and artists creating Pagan-themed work can still qualify for free auctions between now and May 1, 2007!

After months of research and several false starts, the beta release of the new Pagan Arts Marketplace is on line at http://pai.dvpn.org/marketplace/ ! You asked for a collective marketing tool, and Pagan Arts Initiative (PAI) has delivered!!

Now Pagan artists and Craftspeople have a special auction engine to use in selling their creations. Plus, during the beta period, the Marketplace will be available to qualifying artists entirely free of charge! That's right, you can run auctions and sell Yule and post-Yule merchandise without paying any auction fees until May 1! (After May 1, we will be using a membership-based fee structure, not a per-auction fee, so you can budget your annual auction expenses in advance.)

Please try out the new Pagan Arts Marketplace (http://pai.dvpn.org/marketplace/) right away!! This is your chance to become part of the next wave from DVPN's Pagan Arts Initiative!

5:30 pm - Soldiers' widows sue for pagan symbols on headstones

bruhinb
"WASHINGTON (AP) -- The widows of two combat veterans sued the government Monday for not allowing Wiccan symbols on their husbands' military headstones.

"The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs allows military families to choose any of 38 authorized headstone images. The list includes commonly recognized symbols for Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism, as well as those for smaller religions such as Sufism Reoriented, Eckiankar and the Japanese faith Seicho-No-Ie.

"The Wiccan pentacle, a five-pointed star surrounded by a circle, is not on the list, an omission that the widows say is unconstitutional."

Wiccan Soldier's Widow to Speak About VA Approval of Religious Symbols

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 23, 2006, Silver Spring, Maryland--An Interfaith Religious Rights Rally will be held at Farragut Square Park between Noon and 4 PM on America's birthday, the Fourth of July. The rally is in support of universal religious tolerance and free exercise for all religions, as guaranteed in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

Speakers include:

  • Rev. Barry Lynn, spokesperson of Americans United for Separation of Church and State

11:44 am - The New Reformed CAWfeehouse is Now Open for Business!

catdeville
The CAWfeehouse list has now become the New, Reformed CAWfeehouse. (I'm moderator of the list now but not moderator of this community, so this community won't change. As far as I know it's unmoderated.) Due to the recent upheaval in CAW and the fact that the CAW servers are down so all of the CAW lists are now "owned" by the BoD, members who are disillusioned by recent happenings have felt that they had nowhere to go to network with CAW folks in a safe place and maintain their connections without being caught up in all the negativity. I'm hoping that these changes will re-establish that safe space for networking and socialization for CAW members, *ex-CAW* members and friends.

So what's new about it? Well, not a lot, but here's what's different.

  • We're now an adults only group. The members wanted to be able to discuss things of an adult nature freely, so we've moved to the "Adults Only" section of Yahoogroups.

  • We're still not a nest, but I've instituted several policies concerning courtesy and respect as well as a very lenient "minimum participation" requirement which I hope will create a safer, more intimate environment.

  • I've reiterated that, while I won't unsub folks for personal reasons or personality conflicts, I *do* expect everyone to treat *everyone* with courtesy and respect, and that this includes me and people that you disagree with.

  • I've included a focus in the etiquette guidelines on the CAW Principles and the Membership Pledge

  • I've re-emphasized the ban on "CAW politics" on the list

While I changed the name of the list on the Home page, the list addresses and tags all remain the same, so if you've been away for a while and you'd like a safe, coffeehouse type space to interact with old friends and nestmates again, in an environment where you know that a concerted attempt to avoid the negativism of all the political infighting is being made, you're welcome to join us at:

5:28 am - Lovelock Fears Immediate Crisis

davidkevin
Dr. James Lovelock, credited as the author of the Gaia Hypothesis, has done a political turnaround as he sees an imminent crisis due to the role of greenhouse gases in creating global warming: he now thinks a massive effort should be made to convert from fossil fuels to non-CO2-creating nuclear power generation as quickly as possible; that geothermal, solar, and wind power generation cannot take up the slack quickly enough to solve the problem.

He will be hosting a scientific conference on "Gaia and Global Change" at Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devonshire, from June 2-5, the last day of which will be open to the public.

Probably most of you know this by now, but just in case, Maimu Alber died. I'm not sure of the details, just that she was found dead in the hospital a few days after she was admitted.

I'm posting this mostly so the gaffiated CAWfolk not on the lists will know about it. I wasn't close to her, but I liked her a good deal. I'm going to miss her (all too infrequent) presence on one of the lists I was on. Hell, I'll just miss knowing she's out there. :(

10:42 pm - Free Spirit Gathering!!

bruhinb
It's official: just as I was beginning to dither over whether or not I was going to be financially able to pay even the half fee for Free Spirit Gathering (FSG) that came with my usual part-time security position I received a call from George offering me a full-time Security position at the 2004 gathering. That means I'll definitely be there with bells on, and be there all week, too!! (FSG a small, Pagan gathering in Darlington, MD held June 15-20. More information here.)

If anybody else here is also planning on attending, let me know. I'd love to hang out in my off time.
